We are Making a Real Difference in our Community
Our Lung Cancer Screening Program
Lung cancer remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths, but early detection can make all the difference. At Providence Saint John’s Health Center, we are committed to safeguarding the health of our community by offering a comprehensive lung cancer screening program. Designed for both current and former smokers—as well as non-smokers concerned about their lung health—this program provides a proactive approach to detecting lung cancer in its earliest stages. By establishing regular screening habits, patients can gain peace of mind and, when necessary, access timely treatment options that may be less invasive and more effective.
“So lung cancer screening has been demonstrated to shift the diagnosis from later stages, which is where lung cancer traditionally has been
diagnosed, as stage three or stage four disease when it becomes symptomatic, to an earlier stage stage one or two where when patients are typically asymptomatic.”
– George E. Chaux, MD, FCCP
Individuals between the ages of 50 and 80 who have a history of smoking may be eligible for our screening program. The highest-risk individuals are those who currently smoke or have quit within the past 15 years, with a smoking history of at least 20 pack-years. Early screening is particularly crucial because lung cancer symptoms often do not appear until the disease has advanced. By the time symptoms manifest, treatment options may be more limited. Our goal is to identify potential concerns before they progress, ensuring the best possible outcome for our patients.

Scheduling a lung screening at Saint John’s is simple and convenient. A single phone call can help determine eligibility, and our dedicated team will guide patients through every step of the process. Once an appointment is set, a non-invasive imaging scan is conducted and reviewed by expert physicians. If any abnormalities are detected, our specialists will discuss the findings and recommend the appropriate next steps. Throughout the journey, our Nurse Navigator is available to provide guidance, answer questions, and coordinate any necessary follow-ups, making the experience as seamless and supportive as possible.
For most patients, screening results will bring reassurance, as the majority of scans do not reveal cancer. However, for those who do receive a diagnosis, early detection means more treatment options, improved outcomes, and often a quicker recovery. Advances in lung cancer treatment have made it possible to intervene earlier, leading to better survival rates and a higher quality of life for patients. Our screening program is more than just a service—it’s a vital part of our commitment to proactive, patient-centered care.

Disaster Relief Clinic for Pulmonary Conditions
Beyond lung cancer screening, Saint John’s has expanded its pulmonary services to address the growing need for respiratory care in times of crisis. In response to the devastating wildfires affecting Los Angeles, we have opened a Disaster Relief Pulmonary Clinic to serve those suffering from smoke-related respiratory issues. With air quality concerns and the effects of exposure to toxic materials, we provide immediate assessments and treatments for individuals experiencing coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, or chest discomfort. At Saint John’s, we also have the capability and expertise to provide longterm pulmonary and oncologic care.
“We thought it would be a great idea to start a pulmonary clinic to help with any issues that may arise immediately from the fires but also long-term issues from exposure to the toxins.”
– Ashraf M. Elsayegh, MD, FCCP, FAASM
Our clinic is here to offer expert guidance on reducing exposure to carcinogens and safely engaging in post-fire cleanup efforts. Whether you need medical intervention or simply advice on how to protect yourself, we encourage anyone affected to reach out to us.
