Consider Plasma Donation

As the nation confronts the unprecedented coronavirus pandemic, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) took an aggressive step forward in the fight against COVID-19.

Red Cross has been asked by the FDA to help identify potential donors in order to urgently increase options for physicians caring for COVID-19 patients.

Providence St. Joseph Health was one of the first organizations in the U.S. to utilize convalescent plasma. Patients who have fully recovered from COVID-19 infection have antibodies in their plasma that can attack the virus and protect them from becoming infected again with coronavirus. Their plasma may be rich with these antibodies that might be helpful in the treatment of COVID-19 infection in others.

Expanded Access to Convalescent Plasma for Treatment of Patients with COVID-19

Saint John’s Health Center is one Providence St. Joseph Health site collaborating with Mayo Clinic for the FDA approved COVID-19 convalescent plasma patient access program.

This expanded access treatment protocol will provide convalescent plasma to patients in need. Historically, convalescent plasma has been used as a potentially lifesaving treatment when new diseases or infections develop quickly, and no treatments or vaccines were available yet.
